Gemotions

The fluorescent lights of the classroom hummed, a monotonous drone that seemed to burrow into Mrs. Gable's skull. It was the end of a long Tuesday, and the mountain of ungraded papers on her desk felt heavier than ever. She rubbed her temples, trying to massage away the persistent ache that had settled there. A tiny paper crane, left on her desk, caught her eye. It was folded with impossible precision.

A hesitant knock on the door. A young man stood there, clutching a small, elaborately wrapped package. "Mrs. Gable?" he asked, his voice soft. "Remember me? Michael Peterson?" He looked nervous.

The package contained a hand-carved wooden bird, its wings outstretched in a perpetual flight. A note was tucked beneath it. “Thank you for believing in me,” it read. Michael's eyes brimmed. The bird, the note, it was all more than she'd expected.
